While we’re busy gearing up for the new year to officially kick off in September, we’re still finding time to celebrate our incredible faculty and staff! This month, learn all about Sue Halvarson, a Learning Specialist at Wolf, in this edition of We Are Wolf!
1. Can you share a bit about your background and how you ended up at Wolf?
I worked in the Pawtucket School Department for 12 years. I was an elementary classroom teacher, a district literacy coach, and a reading specialist. At one point, I had 54 students on my caseload whom I provided support for in reading and writing. There were just too many students to provide quality instruction, and I struggled to feel like I was making a difference with so many students. I knew I needed a change. Thirteen years ago, I was browsing the newspaper and saw an advertisement that Wolf was hiring. I met with Anna and Jessica, the Head of School at the time, to discuss employment opportunities at Wolf. The moment I left the building, I knew that I would put my resignation in and become part of the Wolf community. It was the best professional decision I’ve ever made!
2. Can you tell us a little bit more about your role here at Wolf?
I started out working in grades six, seven, and eight with a group of students. Later, I became a Learning Specialist providing specialized multisensory instruction in reading using various programs. I’ve worked in both Lower School and Middle School. Being able to provide tailored instruction for what students need is the best part of my job. It’s so rewarding working with students and their families while seeing the progress and growth they can achieve.
3. What is your favorite Wolf School tradition and why?
My favorite Wolf School tradition is Field Day in May. I usually work at a station and get to see all the students with their classroom colors/bandanas smiling and having a great time with their classmates and teachers. Not to mention Spike’s Hot Dogs is a really great treat! My son was able to volunteer for the event this year and could see why I love it so much. When the day was done, he said, “Can I do that again next year?”
3. What is the most rewarding part of your job/time at Wolf?
The most rewarding part of my job is after countless hours preparing, teaching, and practicing reading skills, I get to watch students when they finally unlock “the code to reading.” It’s a gift to me, as much as it is to them.
4. What is your favorite summertime activity?
Suntanning, reading, and swimming in our pool.
Sue, you are a treasured and valuable member of our community, and we are so grateful for the impact you have made in the lives of countless students!
