Looking to learn more about the new staff members who have joined the Wolf team this school year? We’re continuing our introductions of our new staff members with a special feature interview in We Are Wolf. Today, we’d like you to meet Margaret Parsons, Wolf’s new art teacher!
1. Can you briefly tell us about your background?
I’m an artist and educator from New Orleans, Louisiana. I studied animation at Pacific NW College of Art in Portland, OR, and then decided I wanted to share my love of art with others by teaching. When I’m not teaching, I make large-scale sculptures from metal.
2. What do you most enjoy about being an art teacher?
I love the process of discovery! It’s amazing how one prompt can be interpreted in so many different ways. It’s exciting to see each student’s unique perspective in art class.
3. What are you most looking forward to in regards to your role at Wolf?
I am already so inspired by the students at Wolf. I’ve met so many brilliant, patient, bold, enthusiastic artists here!
4. Why do you think it’s important for Complex Learners to explore their creative side in art class?
Art allows us to think with our whole body. It gives us the opportunity to communicate with our hands, to intuitively express complex feelings or ideas. Art is a safe place to explore personal thoughts and feelings, but also observe and appreciate the details of the world around us. I make art about dancers, and movement is a big part of my own creative process. I’m excited to bring joyful movement into my lessons here!
5. What is your favorite thing about Wolf so far?
My favorite thing is the supportive environment– I’ve felt so welcomed by both the students and staff. The sense of teamwork is great. I appreciate being able to work collaboratively to best meet students’ needs!
6. Can you share some of your favorite things to do in your spare time?
I love metalworking. My studio practice involves blacksmithing and welding to make sculptures. Lately, I’ve discovered how to make spoons, and that’s pretty cool. I also love to cook!
Welcome to Wolf, Margaret! We are thrilled to have you here and know you’ll be a tremendous addition to Wolf! Want to read more? Check out past We Are Wolf interviews!
