Collaborative Tile Prints
Room 1 learned about repetition and patterns and drew their own patterns onto printmaking foam in the shape of a cross or star. We learned about making block prints and printed them onto various colors of construction paper. Then each print was added to a collaborative class piece.

Negative Space Shapes
Room 1 looked at a variety of geometric shapes and made stencils from those shapes. Then they chose a composition on black construction paper and made rubbings using chalk pastels.

Van Gogh’s Sunflowers
In preparation for a field trip to the “Beyond Van Gogh” exhibit in Boston, we studied the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh, starting with Sunflowers (1888). We drew our own sunflowers step-by-step. Students then looked at the clear brushstrokes in his paintings and practiced using brushstrokes in that style.

Van Gogh’s Wheatfield with Crows
The next painting we looked at by Van Gogh was Wheatfield With Crows (1890). We drew the field and moon step-by-step and then continued to practice using brushstrokes to fill in color.
